{"id":1193,"date":"2015-11-25T20:28:26","date_gmt":"2015-11-25T20:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/?p=1193"},"modified":"2015-11-26T10:01:26","modified_gmt":"2015-11-26T10:01:26","slug":"the-great-north-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/the-great-north-road\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great North Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A major part of our project is understanding the significance of Cades Road(Margary 80a), the eastern\u00a0 twin of Dere Street running north\/south through the Vale of York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Often in\u00a0 focusing on a defined historical period for research, it is easy to become out of sync with that which went before and after.\u00a0 Most will\u00a0 have heard the urban myth of the A1 being on top of\u00a0 Dere Street on its route through North Yorkshire and Durham, but is that actually true.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Roman road Dere street is\u00a0 a Roman military road hugging\u00a0 the eastern side of the Pennines through our research area,\u00a0 transecting\u00a0 the entrances to the upper Yorkshire and Durham Dales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After leaving Catterick on the Swale and passing Scotch Corner the\u00a0 start of\u00a0 the east\/west route across the Pennines,\u00a0 Dere St leaves the alignment of the\u00a0 modern A1, and slowly begins\u00a0 its climb to an elevation of upto 260m as it moves increasingly west.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The road connects \u00a0 a\u00a0 series of Roman forts in west Durham, Piercebridge on the Tees, Binchester on the Wear, Lanchester on the Browney,\u00a0 Ebchester on the Wear, arriving at the major Roman supply depot at Corbridge on the Tyne, centrally positioned\u00a0 to supply forts on\u00a0 Hadrians Wall both to the west and east. Was it built\u00a0 to create a\u00a0 line\u00a0 of forts, controlling the high Pennines, or to protect a strategic supply route. Perhaps in reality it was a bit of both.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1200\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Dere-A1-Cades.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Dere-A1-Cades-278x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dere St- Great North Road- Cades Road\" width=\"278\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Dere-A1-Cades-278x300.jpg 278w, http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Dere-A1-Cades.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 278px) 100vw, 278px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dere St- Great North Road- Cades Road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It would appear\u00a0 once its military purpose ended in the early 5th century, whilst probably remaining in use as west Durham local road, the next time we see the road as a published route in the medieval period, where it is recorded only as a route to Scotch Corner for\u00a0 access to the east west route across the Pennines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To the north of Scotch Corner,, the focus of medieval settlement\u00a0\u00a0 is in\u00a0 the productive lowland\u00a0 areas and coastal plains, and the strategic routes followed.\u00a0 On a purely practical level as a strategic route, the course of Dere Street in Durham was always a road to knowhere, once Hadrians Wall went out of use,\u00a0 subject even today to winter inaccesibility, and once north of Hadrians Wall a journey to Scotland would have required navigating\u00a0 across the equally inhospitable and at times inaccessible high Cheviot border country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1201\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Gough-Map-1360.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1201\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Gough-Map-1360-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"Gough Map 1360\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Gough-Map-1360-300x163.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Gough-Map-1360-1024x555.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gough Map 1360<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What is\u00a0 interesting is that if we take the Yorkshire stretch of Dere Street, and the Durham stretch of Cades road, join them with a wibbly wobbly bit of the Great North Road, and we end up with the A1 route pre-motorway upgrades<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would now like to\u00a0 introduce an excellent piece of unpublished research on the Great North Road by Hugh Gillespie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreatnorthroad.co.uk\/main.htm\">The Great North Road (H R Gillespie)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I bumped into his website\u00a0 by accident which has a selection of chapters available online to read. I approached Hugh who kindly provided me with the chapters relating to Yorkshire and Durham, and gave me permission to publish them on the blog. They offer a fascinating insight into the development of the modern road system.\u00a0 Of particular interest to me\u00a0 is the reality\u00a0 that the link between Dere Street the Great North Road and the A 1 is quite recent in historical terms, contrary to what many of us believe, as recently as the 1920&#8217;s when the road system was named,\u00a0 the road we know as the A167 Topcliffe\u00a0 to Darlington road through Croft was actually designated the A1 for two years before it was transferred to Leeming Lane which we know\u00a0 today as the A1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fascinating reading, cracking research,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks again to Hugh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reiverenglish.com\/midtees\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Great-North-Road-History-1.-Chapter-1.doc\">Great North Road History 1.
